Wireless Security : Basics

Reference : – http://www.csoonline.com

We all know that in the past years and at present organizations have been deploying wireless devices in their environment.Having wireless devices in the environment means to increase the security concerns of the Information System(IS) Team. When we talk about wireless security , we talk about Encryption & Authentication.

Seeing various devices like IPhone , I Touch,Palm etc coming into the market increases the security concerns.Their UI seems to be friendly , but does it have the protection gear to protect the device from various malicious attacks? The First I Phone lacked basic security standards like VPN,strong passwords, encryption etc.Wireless Network Devices are boon for Hackers as its very easy for them to get into the Wireless Network.Taking all these factors in mind , we still know that big organizations have done nothing regarding the security aspects of Wireless Network.

Simple threat what a wireless network user face is ” what if someone intercept my data, password during transmission”?Now over here ,Authentication and Encryptions comes into the play before and after transmission respectively. We need to make sure that these methods are applied throughout the transmission process as if it gets breached also in between ,it should have a limited impact.I won’t go into details about how authentication and encryption will get implemented.Maybe i’ll think to write about that in my next blog 🙂

If you are using 3G network, then there is not much to worry about, as authentication and encryption is taken care of,but that doesn’t mean hackers won’t be able to penetrate into it.Keep a constant watch  🙂

I’ll talk about handheld devices in my next post .

Thank you,
